Potassium Oxide (K2O) 0%

There are a lot of different fertilizer products on the market, but one that is often overlooked is 46-0-0 Fertilizer. In this article, we will discuss: what does the 46-0-0 fertilizer mean; what is it made of and what are its benefits; how much do you need to use, and when should you apply it in your garden, lawn, or farm for maximum results.

What Does 46-0-0 Fertilizer Mean?

The first thing to know about 46-0-0 fertilizer is that it contains the three major macronutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K). When you see a number, such as 46-0-0 for example, this means the ratio of these nutrients in relation to each other. In 46-0-0 fertilizer, there is a 46% concentration of nitrogen.

The second thing to know about 46-0-0 fertilizer is that it does not contain any sulfur and calcium materials because they are micronutrients that do not play as large a role in plant growth. This means the ratio can be adjusted depending on your plants’ needs by just adding different ratios of other fertilizers containing these nutrients if needed.

What is 46-0-0 Fertilizer Good for?

46-0-0 fertilizer is a great choice for plants that need high amounts of nitrogen. These include flowering crops like tomatoes or summer squash, as well as fruit trees and berry bushes (think blueberries). If you want to use it on your lawn, do so during the spring before new growth begins.

When to use it?

Farmers will use 46-0-0 fertilizer in the early spring on fruit trees and berry bushes as they are starting to grow. It can also be used later in summer, but only if you want a boost of nitrogen for flowering crops like tomatoes or squash. For lawns, it should be applied once every year around April before new growth begins. Keep in mind that this type of fertilizer shouldn’t last more than six months because fertilizers with high amounts of ammonia may damage your soil composition over time. If you need to reapply any form of compound fertilizer during the season, make sure that it is not always just one ingredient such as an N-P-K mix or organic material (manure) alone since different plants.

When using 46-0-0 fertilizer in plant beds with soil amendments such as mulch, composted manure, and garden lime then follow these guidelines:

  • First, apply an inch or two of organic matter into the bed at least six months prior to planting
  • Next, add fertilizers according to plant needs – don’t forget calcium sources!
  • Lastly, cover them up by spreading about three inches of clean straw mulch.
